HISTORY OF LONAVALA HILL STATION

Lonavala got its name from the Sanskrit word “Lonavli” which means enclosed with caves. The city was reigned by Yadavas, Mughals, Marathas, Pehwas, and finally the British. After Independence, the city Lonavala took the shape of a famous hill station in Maharashtra state of India.

RYEWOOD PARK

Named after an English Officer Mr.Rye. Ryewood was once a botanical garden, now turned into a park. Spread over 25 acres the park provide extensive green lawns equipped with swings for children to play and adults to sit and stroll around the park.

VALVAN DAM

Valvan Dam is a huge water barrage which serves as the water source for the generation of electricity at the Khopoli Power Station, and is located at the foothills of the Sahyadri Mountains.

LONAVALA LAKE

Sourced by the Indrayani River, Lonavala Lake mesmerizes the visitors with simplistic beauty and serene nature around. The lake is popularly known as the monsoon lake. Various species of flora and fauna can be found in this region. .

DUKE'S NOSE

It is a popular place for trekking in Maharashtra. Duke's Nose is named after the Duke of Wellington, owing to its resemblance to the nose of Duke in a reclining position.

TIGER'S LEAP

Tiger’s Leap is one of the most frequented sightseeing places in Lonavala. The valley is named as it gives resemblance to a tiger leaping into the valley. It provides panoramic views of the lush green forests and waterfalls of Lonavala.

KARLA CAVES

The Karla Caves were once a Buddhist Monastery consisting of 16 excavations. The cave contains a few representations of Buddha and has a temple of goddess Ekvira Devi.

BHAJE CAVES

Bhaje Caves is located almost 400mts above village Bhaja. The cave has a horseshoe arched entrance and is one of the earliest rock-cut chaitya griha in Maharashtra.

LOHAGAD FORT

Lohagad literally means Iron, thus the Iron Fort. It is a fort of historical importance at an elevation of 3400 feet above sea level. Situated in the Sahyadri Ranges of Maharashtra, it separates the Indrayani Basin from the Pawna Basin. It was once the treasury of the great Maratha ruler Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.

BHUSHI DAM

Located on the Indrayani River, Bhushi dam is one of the best getaways for people living in the locality and around. Lush Green Hills, Sound of Water, and, the beautiful chirping of birds makes it one of the must visit places in Lonavala.

LION'S POINT

It is one of the popular viewpoints in Lonavala. The view from Lions Point is majestic and panoramic. One would see dozens of small waterfalls, lush green hills, and lakes around during monsoon season.

SHOOTING POINT

Shooting Point is known for its breathtaking views of the river valley and aerial view of the Rajmachi Fort.

KATALDHAR WATERFALL

Kataldhar is a seasonal waterfall located in the Ulhas Valley. You can spot Kataldhar Waterfall enroute to the popular Rajmachi Fort.
